3D scan yourself at home with Shapify:me and a Kinect!

What if it was possible to scan someone really easily and then order a 3D print of the scan? This issue has been around for quite some time now. We’ve seen several attempts in the past, but results were always a little bit off. That’s why we were thrilled to work with Artec Group on a new solution.

Artec Group has just announced the first 3D-scanning and printing service available at home. They’ve launched a new, very cool cloning service for people with Microsoft Kinect for Windows or Kinect for Xbox 360 equipment. Kinect users can individually scan themselves, friends and family, upload the scan to the Shapify.me website (http://www.shapify.me/) and receive a 3D figurine sent to their address. This isn’t a 3D image – it’s a solid, 3D figurine, like a miniature statue – looking just like you, only smaller.

The figurines will be 1/20th your actual height and 3D printed in monochrome or color. It’s made of either white plastic or multicolored material.

Artec has done an amazing job creating a way to use the Kinect as a 3D scanner. They’ve reached a great level of precision and simplicity. Shapify:me is really easy, all you need to do is follow the voice instructions and after a few minutes you’ll be able to upload your scan into the Printshop.

Artec partnered with us to handle the 3D printing part. That way, every print will be printed and shipped by Sculpteo. A few days after you’ve scanned yourself or one of your love ones, you’ll receive your clone figurine home.

The way we see it, the timing is perfect to start casually scan some family members and surprise them with an unusual 3D printed Christmas gift. At least, some of us at Sculpteo’s will.
