In a recent article, we exposed our reflexion over Digital Manufacturing and Agile Manufacturing, how they differ but also how digital manufacturing can strengthen agile manufacturing. Today, we are sharing with you this infographic that explains what is digital manufacturing!

To conceive this infographic, we first used our expertise in the manufacturing field. In fact, our clients are more and more inclined to use our service for prototyping and/or producing. We see how it is easy for them, once the CAD file is conceived to decide how they are going to manage their production, with more flexibility. To assert what we think and know about digital manufacturing, we referred to impacting companies and papers such as the Wholers Report 2016, the International Data Corporation, the Business Wire and feedbacks from the World Economic Forum.

Digital manufacturing can be defined as an integrated approach to manufacturing that is centered around a computer system. A machine is able to read a CAD (computer aided design) file in order to deliver it in a few hours. Within the same process, it is possible to prototype, produce and fabricate molds to aid production.

When consumers’ habits and expectations are evolving, it is necessary that we find a new production mode. Within the Factory of the Future, Digital manufacturing appears as an answer to this evolution. It allows an iterative production, beneficial to meet consumer’s demand. Quicker and producing high-quality prototypes, digital manufacturing enhances productivity. It allows real-time inventory monitoring which allows companies to master their whole production line and intervene when it is necessary to adapt the product to the changing market.

Prospects are very positive in this sense. If we take the example of 3D printing, worldwide spending is going to increase by 27%, according to the Wholers Report 2016. For global economy as for businesses, prospection of growth and economic efficiency are undeniable. According to the State of 3D Printing 2016, 61% respondents say their ROI was better than the year before.
