Color Touch Guide

Description

The Color Touch finish is a premium dyeing process developed with Sculpteo’s advanced technology. This finish gives your 3D printed parts a satin appearance, making them look like high-quality, finished products. Thanks to the specialized post-printing treatment we apply before coloring your 3D parts, they become resistant enough to withstand external conditions, as well as scratching and rubbing.

In addition, the process ensures very stable and consistent color across different production batches, which is ideal when producing large quantities of identical parts. The surface exhibits a uniform, high-quality color with excellent visual consistency.

If your 3D printed white Nylon PA12 or PA11 parts are intended for prolonged exposure to external conditions, we recommend applying the Color Touch finish to prevent unwanted yellowing over time. With this finish, your 3D printed parts achieve a premium, durable appearance with enhanced longevity.

Parts colored using Sculpteo’s technology can be skin-safe. (by default for black, for other colors, please contact us) Furthermore, the dyes and additives used in the process provide excellent UV resistance. Some of our customers have used colored products, such as 3D printed eyewear, daily for many years, and the colors remain vibrant and UV-stable.

Process

Submerged in a water bath, the dye penetrates the plastic through a chemical reaction under heat. The penetration depth is typically 0.2 mm and can even be increased using our intensive color solution. No material is added and every surface is reached in the water bath.

Delivery Time

Dyeing with Color Touch finish can extend the processing time of your 3D printed parts by 1-3 days on average, which means:

  • Express production: unavailable. 

  • Standard production: minimum 5 to 7 days on average. 

  • Economy production: unavailable. 

The maximum size for dyeing your models with the Color Touch finish is limited by the physical size of the dyeing tank. Your designs must respect this maximum size in order to be dyed with Color Touch finish. There is no minimum size for dyeing with Color Touch finish.

Sculpteo’s coloring solution is compatible with parts of all geometries. Even very delicate or complex pieces can undergo the coloring process without any issues. When submerged in a water bath, the dye penetrates the plastic through a chemical reaction activated by heat. This allows the color to reach areas that cannot be coated evenly with traditional painting. Thanks to the chemical reaction between the dye and the material, the parts retain their original geometric properties.

We recommend avoiding hollowing your 3D printed parts, as hollow pieces may float in the tank, resulting in uneven coloring. Additionally, shallow engravings may become filled with cleaning media during the sandblasting stage of post-processing. If engravings are an essential part of your design, we suggest making them as deep as possible to ensure effective cleaning. For optimal powder removal and improved visibility of details, the width of each engraved feature should be at least equal to its depth.

Please also note that engraved lines with widths between 0.3 and 0.6 mm may retain traces of cleaning media within their cavities.
